Reigning Olympic champion An Se-young and Lin Chun-yi won the women’s and men’s singles titles, respectively, at the India Open 2026 badminton tournament in New Delhi on Sunday.
World No. 1 An Se-young of the Republic of Korea defended her India Open women’s singles title with a commanding 21-13, 21-11 win over second-ranked Wang Zhiyi of the People’s Republic of China at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex.
An Se-young, who had earlier swept past former world champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand in the semi-finals, did not drop a single game en route to the title.
“Today, I was focused on playing more aggressively as she (Wang Zhiyi) is a difficult player to beat. I am happy that I could execute the plans and win another title,” An Se-young said after the win.
In the men’s singles final, Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chun-yi, 12th in the badminton rankings, captured his maiden BWF Super 750 crown after a 21-10, 21-18 win over third seed and world No. 4 Jonatan Christie of Indonesia.
Lin Chun-yi’s relentless attacks unsettled Christie early on as the Chinese Taipei shuttler took a 4-0 lead early on and never looked back as he raced from 10-5 to 18-5 in no time to pocket the opening game.
The second game saw Christie changing tactics and engaging his opponent in longer rallies. The ploy seemed to have worked as the Indonesian opened up an 18-15 lead before Lin Chun-yi won six successive points to win the India Open.
“Today I think I played well. I didn’t feel the pressure in the final. I wanted to enjoy the match and play in the moment. I got a leg injury in Malaysia, and hence I was not at my best but my injury healed well, and I did well here,” Lin Chun-yi said.
Meanwhile, the Chinese shuttlers won both the men’s and women’s doubles titles in contrasting fashion.
Paris 2024 silver medallists Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang of China rallied to clinch the men’s doubles crown after a 17-21, 25-23, 21-16 triumph over Hiroki Midorikawa and Kyohei Yamashita of Japan.
Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning, also Paris 2024 silver medallists, secured the women’s doubles title after a comfortable 21-11, 21-19 win against Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto of Japan.
In the mixed doubles final, Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran saved four match points in the second game and eventually defeated Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje 19-21, 25-23, 21-18.
